The story

From canvas
to the blockchain.

The Three Churchills is a digital fine-art series exploring power, resilience, and historical memory through a reinterpretation of Winston Churchill.

Each work begins with Cortes’s original artwork on canvas and is transformed through digital techniques. Composer Gil’s orchestral writing and sound design trace three stages of Churchill’s wartime psychology: gathering dread, unyielding defiance, and the machinery of total war.

The result is not simply a portrait, but a meeting of image, music, speech, and history—preserved as three singular audiovisual works.

The collaboration

Two veterans. One shared language.

Cortés and Gil create together as GilTes. The two Navy veterans served alongside one another before reuniting through art, and have since collaborated on several NFTs. Their shared experience of service gives The Three Churchills an intimate understanding of duty, sacrifice, resilience, and the private weight carried by those called to lead.

Navy veteran · Self-taught visual artist

Cortés

A Navy veteran and devoted supporter of the veteran community, Cortés paints alongside his professional life as a deeply personal form of expression. His work is rooted not in formal academic training, but in lived experience, discipline, and an instinctive need to give visual form to history and emotion.

In The Three Churchills, his expressive portraits examine the human being beneath the public figure: a leader confronting uncertainty, defiance, and the machinery of war. Through Churchill, Cortés reflects on themes familiar to generations of service members—the demands of duty, the burden of command, and resilience under pressure.

Navy veteran · Composer

Gil

A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music, Gil has composed across multiple media, with works performed in a variety of settings—including Carnegie Hall. His musical language brings orchestral craft, historic sound, and psychological tension into dialogue with Cortés’s imagery.

Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, Gil’s expanding military responsibilities moved composition into the background. After years devoted principally to service, he is returning to his creative practice. The Three Churchills marks part of that return: a collaboration with a fellow Navy veteran and former shipmate, shaped by their shared understanding of sacrifice, leadership, and historical memory.
